The obvious upside to the central account is all your e-mail in one place online if you don't have your thumbdrive and portable TB with you.

IMAP seems to be the answer. The Invisiblehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08816261262627369350noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4954164004088523382.post-75461653423577354832008-08-26T23:00:00.000-06:002008-08-26T23:00:00.000-06:00Thanks for experimenting with this and sharing you...Thanks for experimenting with this and sharing your experience and set up. I work in two states and am constantly on different computers with email access being a high priority.

Like yourself, I have a number (not as high however ;)) of addresses that I respond to from working with several companies. I would love to use gmail if only for the 99% uptime web access and a great labeling system. I do not own a tin foil hat and have nothing to hide and have actually found great companies by clicking on the robotically placed ads.

I also started using thunderbird portable about 2 weeks ago and cannot stand the lag (thanks for the hard drive tip...duh!). The kicker came when the other day I misplaced my drive - quickly realized how flawed my original "all my eggs in one basket" idea was.

The fact that Gmail has to ad the sender field with your gmail address is a total deal-breaker however. Personally, I think it is one, very unprofessional and two, a very good way to put my email address in the wild for spammers to pick up. I'm curious if you are just taking the good with the bad here and biting the bullet.

Anyway, I believe I found my solution which I am going to try this weekend. I plan to have my gmail account pull all my pop mail using the mail fetcher and remove it from the respective servers. Then I am going to set up TB Portable to pull my gmail using imap instead of pop. There is a great resource explaining the benefits here which essentially outlined the reasons why I decided to go this route - labels included!

http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77657

Hopefully you will find this interesting and thanks again.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4954164004088523382.post-52573330721216237142008-08-18T16:31:00.000-06:002008-08-18T16:31:00.000-06:00google apps is a good alternative, however there a...google apps is a good alternative, however there are some features missing in google apps docs as compared with regular google docs

another trick is to use a firefox plugin like gmail manager, if you can find some way to sync your browser

the only true way to login to multiple gmail or google accounts is to use multiple profiles

this can be done in firefox 3 with "firefox --no-remote -ProfileManager"
(this may vary a bit by operating system)

it can be more trouble than its worth however, and this is an ongoing issue that needs more attention :)

another alternative is some websites offering multiple login to multiple webmail services, zenbe.com is the only current one i know but its not 100% perfect, anyone know of similar alternatives? in the end that is probably the most usable kind of methodAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4954164004088523382.post-27021928571117850412008-08-11T13:34:00.000-06:002008-08-11T13:34:00.000-06:00why yes I am aware that "lax" isn't to be used as ...why yes I am aware that "lax" isn't to be used as a verb, thank you very much.

burned.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4954164004088523382.post-59475216736439046292008-08-10T11:42:00.000-06:002008-08-10T11:42:00.000-06:00Thanks for checking in, KSG, but I don't really co...Thanks for checking in, KSG, but I don't really consider LaoPowerTools a solution as it leaves Vista users out in the cold (for now), and it only works with Mac Mail and Microsoft Outlook.

Also, the minimal info I can find on the company would make me very nervous about using it for any sensitive communication.

Perhaps I'm overlooking another solution in the 60+ comments on that post, but #38 is the only one I see addressing the "on behalf of" issue, and it states simply (paraphrasing): use LaoPowerTools --and that guy/girls only been using it a week). The Invisiblehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08816261262627369350noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4954164004088523382.post-3027591337186535692008-08-08T19:21:00.000-06:002008-08-08T19:21:00.000-06:00For a solution to the "On behalf of" problem, see ...For a solution to the "On behalf of" problem, see the discussion in David Pogue's NY Times column of a week or so ago:

http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/07/22/mobile-me-e-mail-for-the-rest-of-us/#commentsksghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10239824617275328621noreply@blogger.com
