what I'm listening to: "Close to Me" by The Cure
It kills me that there are thousands of products available with retractable cord winders (see photo to right), but NOBODY sells just the winder itself. There's a company somewhere in Asia (the address is Shanghai, China, but the site is in Russian) that sells what I'm talking about, but I'm not about to give my credit card number to them.
I've purchased several mobile headsets from Jabra with retractable cord winders... why not sell just the cord winder? I would just take one of the Jabra units apart, but they're all put together with "welded" plastic, so they disintegrate if you try to disassemble them to put in your own headset. I'm to the point where I'm about to go to T.J. Maxx and purchase one of those iPod accessory kits that include the "bud" earphones with the retractable cord, snip off the buds, and solder my own (superior) headphone earpieces to the cord.
If anybody knows of a place you can actually purchase JUST the retractor so that you can use your own headphones, please post a link in the comments!
And please don't post a link to any of those crappy winders that you have to manually wrap around a stick, disc or "core." They suck.

Hey, did you manage to find something? I've been searching the net for a couple of hrs now and having the same issue! it sux that all the headphones that come with retractable winders are crappy....and why doesn't anybody make one that houses the buds as well?
No luck so far. I did manage to take one of the jabra auto-retractors apart and get it to (sort of) work with an existing pair of headphones, but it would be much better if the existing headphones had a flatter (thinner) wire.
I can't believe no one is making this. It's such an EXTREMELY simple idea. I'm positive someone could make millions. I just don't have time to source the materials and production, and then market it.
That's funny man, I stumbled upon this after searching for a few hours for exactly that. I've come across this:
http://www.gearlog.com/2006/09/handson_with_zipwraps.php
But apparently it's discontinued or something???
Have you tried this http://www.skylabsproducts.com/store/index.asp ?
Finally! That's exactly what I'm talking about (though at $15 you're going to spend twice as much for the winder than a decent pair of headphones... ack!).
@The Invisible:
Personally, I need a mic in my earphones (to use with my cell), not common in retractable form with only one input (most come with separate mic and headset inputs). My headset in 10$ on Amazon (my set came with my cell), so for extra 5 bucks I can have retractable ones (and be the envy of all my friends heh heh)
This just came out.... www.recoilwinders.com
hi guy!
I guess this maybe you need http://www.thebestearbuds.com/retractable-earbuds-clever-items-simplify-life/
There are some retractable earbuds such as The TDK Retractable earbuds comes from Japanese Brand or Sony MDR-KX70LW/B Earbud.

I can't believe it's taken this long for someone to actually do this! And I am so happy that it's being made with an aluminum housing (not cheap plastic). Right on.
Hmmmm... I got excited too fast. That kickstarter campaign is from five years ago, and it doesn't look like the product they made is available anymore, so... still nothing out there.
